In this performance, staged by Serge van Veggel, The New European Ensemble is led by conductor Hernán Schvartzman. Main soloists are Quirijn de Lang (Hamlet), Lucie Chartin (Ophélie), Martijn Sanders (Claudius), Martina Prins (Gertrude), Jan-Willem Schaafsma (Laertes), and Patrick Pranger (Horatio). Tel Aviv, Israel. Indian conductor Zubin Mehta (1936) became Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) in 1977 and was appointed Music Director for Life in 1981. On July 18, 1996, Mehta led the IPO in its first-ever performance of Richard Strauss's tone poem Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Op. 28. Renowned as one of the world's foremost interpreters of the great symphonic repertoire-especially the Romantic works of Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, and Richard Strauss-Mehta had conducted this popular masterpiece many times before. However, this was the first occasion he rehearsed it from the very beginning with the orchestra. This episode of 'In Rehearsal' offers an intimate look at the dialogue between Mehta and the musicians as they explore Strauss's tone poem together.

Italy. After recording all 32 Ludwig van Beethoven piano sonatas to celebrate the composer's 250th birth anniversary, celebrated Italian pianist Riccardo Schwartz decided to record solo piano works by Robert Schumann. In this performance, Schwartz presents Schumann's Fantasiestücke, Op. 12. Written in 1837, the work is a set of eight piano pieces with contrasting moods. The work's title is derived from one of the composer's favourite authors' collection of novellas: E. T. A. Hoffmann's Fantasiestücke in Callots Manier. Like Schumann's Davidsbündlertänze, his Fantasiestücke are designed as a musical dialogue between Florestan and Eusebius, representing the duality of his own personality. The former represents the composer's passionate side, and the latter depicts the dreamer in Schumann. Acclaimed pianist Riccardo Schwartz (1986) has performed as a soloist with many world-renowned conductors, including Gustav Kuhn and Yuri Temirkanov. His acclaimed performances include recitals and concertos for piano and orchestra in many prestigious concert halls.

Muziekgebouw, Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Richard Danielpour (*1956) is one of the most beloved American composers of his generation due to his frequent referencing of and connection with the past, being inspired by American icons such as Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber and Leonard Bernstein. His lush musical language is often infused with swingy jazz rhythms just as is the music of Copland and Bernstein. Thus, he conveys an intense musical experience to the listener with his intuitive musical style, his exquisite melodic lines and accessible harmonic language. All this makes him to be a hugely popular composer with American orchestras. The initial idea for the composition of a song cycle "Elegies" came from the American mezzo soprano Frederica von Stade who was born in 1945, the same year in which her father was killed when the Jeep he was driving drove over a land mine. Charles von Stade is buried at the American cemetery in Margraten (South Netherlands). His daughter could thus only create a picture of him for herself via family stories and through his letters. These letters form the basis of the text of the songs, where father and daughter "meet" and communicate for the first time. The first movement Vigil, depicts the arrival of the daughter who hopes for a spiritual connection with her father. The second movement describes the intense sorrow of her father at the horrors of war and is as if his daughter is calling on him to return to her. In the third movement we hear the father give his unborn daughter his blessing, "Little soul, to where would you go from the darkness of the wombn" Movement four is the preparation for the reunion of the souls of father and daughter which takes place in movement five, Paradise. Here the daughter welcomes her father's spiritual rest and sings, "Peace, the air which I breathe".The philharmonie zuidnederland is conducted by Harmut Haenchen. The slowly starting opening movement of the symphony depicts the awakening of nature in spring. The rural second movement is based on a Ländler, an Austrian folk dance, followed by a funeral march in the third movement. The expansive final movement brings back elements from the first movement, thus unifying the symphony. This performance was recorded at Auditorio Sony of the Reina Sofía School of Music in Madrid, Spain, on May 30, 2023.

Notre-Dame de Paris. Olivier Latry is the current holder of the Great Organ of Notre Dame. Between its original religious function and the interest of composers of all times, the great organ Cavaillé-Coll reveals its absolute modernity. Latry is considered one of the greatest organists of his generation, both in France and internationally. He sees himself as an ambassador of French music from the 17th through the 20th centuries as well as an advocate for the art of improvisation. Pieces played in the film are: Pierre Cochereau's Boléro, Louis Vierne's Carillon of Westminster and Scherzo from Symphony No. 2, Alexandre Guilmant's Sonata No. 1, Charles-Marie Widor's Gothic Symphony, Marcel Dupre's Cortege, Litanie and J. S. Bach's Passacaille & Fugue.

Hall of Mirrors, Castle of Köthen, Germany. J. S. Bach's six Brandenburg Concerto's belong to his best-known works. The composer wrote these concertos between 1711 and 1720 and dedicated them in 1721 to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. In celebration of the pieces' 300th anniversary, Czech harpsichordist and conductor Václav Luks and the renowned Baroque ensemble Collegium 1704 recorded all six Brandenburg Concertos on historical instruments in 2021. The concertos are based on the Italian concerto grosso form, in which a group of solo instruments is set against a large ensemble. Bach's Brandenburg Concertos feature remarkable combinations of solo instruments and virtuoso solos. This performance was recorded at the Hall of Mirrors in the Köthen Castle, Germany.

Philharmonie Köln, Cologne. Claude Debussy's symphonic sketches for orchestra known collectively as 'La Mer' evoke a richly varied vision of the sea. The first part ('De l'aube á midi sur la mer') calls up a morning and afternoon at sea, the second ('Jeux de vagues') echoes the play of the waves, and the third and final part ('Dialogue du vent et de la mer') conjures the communing voices of wind and waves. Debussy knew his sea, the Mediterranean, intimately both from childhood visits to Cannes and from his Italian travels later in life.

Concertgebouw Brugge, Belgium. Conductor Jan Latham-Koenig leads the Flanders Symphony Orchestra in this concert recorded at Concertgebouw Brugge, Belgium, on April 21, 2016. The program opens with Felix Mendelssohn's concert overture Die Hebriden, Op. 26 (The Hebrides). During a trip to Scotland, the composer was deeply impressed by the natural splendor of Staffa, an island of the Inner Hebrides, which inspired him to compose his concert overture. Next on the program is Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 16, featuring Pascal Amoyel as the pianist. It is the composer's only concerto. Grieg composed the work in 1868, drawing inspiration from Norwegian folk music. The program ends with Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92. The work is very popular, especially because of its touching second movement. At the Allegretto's 1813 premiere, the audience demanded an immediate encore.

Sala Nezahualcóyotl, Centro Cultural Universitario, Mexico City. Mexican conductor José Areán leads the Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería and four vocal soloists in a performance of Gustav Mahler's cantata 'The Song of Lamentation' (Das klagende Lied). Among the soloists are soprano Sally Dibblee, mezzo-soprano Marjorie Elinor Dix, tenor Arturo Chacón, and bass Stephen West. Written between 1878-1880, the work is based on a fairy tale by Ludwig Bechstein and the brothers Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm about two brothers, one good and one cruel, who become rivals for a queen's hand. The story culminates in the murder of the virtuous younger brother and the subsequent discovery of his bones, from which a minstrel makes a flute that sings of the crime. This chilling tale is brought to life in the cantata through music and a minstrel's flute, which exposes the truth at the royal court. This performance was recorded at Sala Nezahualcóyotl of the Centro Cultural Universitario in Mexico City, in 2012.

Festival Musica Sacra, Bever, België. Arvo Pärt based his 'Kanon Pokajanen' (from 'Canon of Repentance to Our Lord Jesus Christ', 1995-97) on the canon of repentance as handed down in the earliest Slavic-Christian manuscripts, dating back to the sixth century after Christ. The canon symbolizes the change, the transformation from day to night, the Old and New Testament, prophecy and the fulfillment, the here and now and the hereafter. This deals with the human and the divine, weakness and strength, suffering and redemption, mortality and immortality. In this broadcast, 'Kanon Pokajanen' is performed by the chamber choir Aquarius. This Flemish chamber choir is a trailblazer where new music and new concert formats are concerned. 'Kanon Pokajanen' is a great example of this: the singers are positioned in a circle in the center of a church. This dark church is only lit by candles and the music stand lights. After the choir has entered in procession, they sing for close to two hours. Performed by the Aquarius Choir led by Michael de Smet in 2008.

Opera Antwerp, Belgium. The Royal Ballet Flanders performs a beautiful program with ballets by choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Jeroen Verbruggen. The Symphonic Orchestra of the Opera Vlaanderen is conducted by Yannis Pouspourikas. Ravel remains a source of inspiration for many choreographers. Cherkaoui and rising talent Verbruggen take their vision of Ravel's music to the stage with the Ballet Flanders. Verbruggen draws his inspiration from Ravel's "Pavane pour une infante défunte" and from "Ma mere l'Oye." Cherkaoui also translates Ravel into dance, opting for the colorful "Pictures at an Exhibition" composed by Mussorgsky, which was orchestrated by Ravel to become the most widely performed orchestration of this work. Among the star dancers are Nancy Osbaldeston, Alexander Burton, and Drew Jacoby. Recorded in the Opera Antwerp in 2016 and directed by Andreas Morell.

Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall, Yerevan, Armenia. Conductor Eduard Topchjan leads the Armenian National Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37. Russian-born pianist Maya Oganyan (*2005) makes her solo debut with the orchestra. Beethoven composed this concerto in 1800 and played the piano part himself at the piece's premiere in 1803. Like two of his other major works -Symphony No. 5 and Piano Sonata No. 8 'Pathétique' - this piano concerto is written in the key of C minor, which contributes to the work's stormy character. As an encore, Oganyan performs Der Bote ('The Messenger') by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov. This performance was recorded at the Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall in Yerevan, Armenia, in 2021.
